Piano Technique: The Ten Finger Hand Concept

Lesson Goal: To understand the ten finger finger hand concept of piano technique and how to use it to integrate the left and right sides of your musical mind and body…

Using the introduction (first 4 bars) from “The Entertainer”, welcome to a lesson on how to fundamentally change the way you think about piano technique and interpretation and how this influences your study and practice habits. (Requests always welcome.)

  1. Many teachers say: First learn the Melody , second the base line, then both together. I struggle with that every time! Do you proclaim to learn treble and bass lines together?

    1. Thanks for asking, Klaus.

The order of assembly for studying and practicing any piece of music always depends…

It depends on the student’s reading abilities, whether the student is experiencing a problem with reading, fingering, rhythm, technique, phrasing, coordination, interpretation, and if there’s a fundamental gap in musicianship (music theory).

Importantly, melody is impossible to understand without understanding the harmony, so the chord progressions and form must be deeply understood as well.

Of course, the ultimate goal is to integrate all the above (by studying and practicing the right way) into a coherent performance where your mind’s ear automatically triggers a full body choreography that fluently expresses your musical intentions.

      Thanks and Peace.
