How to Conquer Performance Anxiety (Stage Fright): Reasons for Playing

Why would you put yourself through the discomfort (and possible agony) of playing for others to begin with?

Reasons to perform for other may include:

  1. Fame.
  2. Money.
  3. Fun.
  4. Love of music.
  5. Love of people.
  6. Community.
  7. Education.
  8. Service to others.
  9. Self-awareness.
  10. Self-improvement.
  11. Self-expression.
  12. Personal growth.
  13. Can you think of some others?

Assuming you are serious about making music an important part of your life, performing for others makes you a better musician… in at least three ways:

  1. Each performance is a fair measure of your current abilities.
  2. Each performance tells you what you need to study and practice in order to improve.
  3. Each approaching performance is a strong motivation to elevate your study-practice habits in preparation.
