The so-called definitive tones for a major 7th chord are “the 3” and “the 7”, so called because they define the chord type. Playing the root plus these two tones as an arpeggio in the left hand is a great accompaniment pattern for ballads… By the way, feel free to split this between hands, root in the left, definitive tones in the right…

You still have HOMEWORK to do: Using your knowledge of scales and chord structure (and your ears of course), transpose this voicing to all twelve keys. In doing so, you are going to build an enormous chord vocabulary that integrates the aural, visio-spatial, kinesthetic and lays a solid foundation for fluent improvisation.
